In this monthly piece, I’m going to focus on the fun and interesting news coming out about Airbnb. I’ll mostly be ignoring news from governments and special-interest groups about regulation, litigation, taxes, housing crisis, etc.

I’ve been following this type of news for over a year now, and just recently I’m starting to see articles written on how Airbnb is NOT impacting rental prices. If you step back and take a look at the numbers, even if 100% of Airbnb rentals were taking otherwise long-term housing off the market (actually, it’s 10% according to this article), it still would have almost no impact. But, even if it was, why don’t we focus on increasing the housing stock instead of tormenting Airbnbs? When did it become a bad thing to live in a desirable city?
So. Many. Questions. I’m all for this, but is it property management? Or, consulting? And, are potential hosts not hosting because of time, which this would solve for, or because of other reasons like perceived security issues, etc.? I think the latter.
As an Airbnb property manager, I wonder who will take care of the guest who can’t figure out the lockbox at 11pm on Friday night. Or, who will call the plumber when guest says the toilet is clogged at 7am on a Sunday.
