In this monthly piece, I’m going to focus on the fun and interesting news coming out about Airbnb. I’ll mostly be ignoring news from governments and special-interest groups about regulation, litigation, taxes, housing crisis, etc. This post is Airbnb news April 2017.

As a prior employee, I can confirm the accuracy of this story although it’s about two years old and it was never a serious project and never made it to any company wide meeting. Interesting idea, though.
Apparently, Portland has started an initiative to do this with one catch: you must first house a homeless family for five years, then the free home in your backyard is yours to do what ever you want with it including renting on Airbnb.

Airbnb is one of the best in coming up with creative ways to market their brand. Unfortunately, the author didn’t include a link to the Airbnb listing and I couldn’t find it online. Please post it if you see it.

Hah! Maybe this will start the inevitable showdown between home-sharing (Airbnb, VRBO, Flipkey, etc.) and hotels. There will always be a place for hotels. Someone will always want the ease of booking a place and knowing exactly what they’ll get. These people pay a premium for this.
